The purpose of this combined studies course is to develop an understanding of both the English and Social Studies curricula by applying skills and knowledge. The course Humanities 8 enables students to develop their communication, critical thinking, and personal/social skills. The relationship of language and text as it contributes to understanding ourselves and making connections with others and the world is explored. Interactions, conflicts, and environment are analyzed to identify major cultural, social, and political shifts of the time period of 7th century to 1750s. These big idea concepts are further explored within an investigation of the Medieval Period and Renaissance. Geographic knowledge and skills learned in Grade 7 are reinforced and built upon by furthering continued studies. In literature, there is an emphasis on reading and student investigation. Reading materials will include novels, short story, poem, non-fiction, and text documentation to name a few, focusing on universal patterns within content area disciplines.
