An Introduction to Learning French at Palmer
Learning French is more than just studying a second language — it’s opening the door to new cultures, new opportunities, and new ways of thinking. At the Vancouver School Board (VSB), students have access to a variety of French programs designed to help them build confidence, fluency, and a strong foundation in one of Canada’s official languages.

Why Learn French?
French is spoken in more than 50 countries around the world. In Canada, it plays an important role in government, business, education, and cultural life. Students who learn French gain valuable communication skills and are better prepared for careers that require bilingualism.

French Programs at Palmer
R.C. Palmer offers several pathways for students who want to learn French:
-
Core French: Introduced in late elementary school, this program gives students basic vocabulary, grammar, and communication skills.
-
Early French Immersion: Starting in Kindergarten, students learn most of their subjects in French. This approach helps students develop strong language skills naturally.
-
Late French Immersion: Beginning in Grade 6, students switch to learning most of their subjects in French, building fluency quickly.
-
Intensive French: A short, focused program where students spend part of the year learning mainly in French, then return to regular subjects later.

Continuing into High School
French Immersion students can continue their studies through Grades 8–12. By graduation, students may earn a Bilingual Dogwood Diploma, showing that they have completed significant coursework in French — an achievement recognized by universities and employers.

Beyond the Classroom
Many VSB French programs encourage cultural activities, community involvement, and collaboration. Students may participate in French clubs, cultural events, or school projects that help them use the language in real-life situations.

Building a Bilingual Future
Whether a student is just starting or is continuing from earlier grades, the VSB creates a supportive environment for learning French. With experienced teachers and well-structured programs, students can develop strong language skills that will benefit them for life.
