China's industrial economy has made steady progress during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025), with manufacturing continuing to play a foundational role in strengthening the country's economy, outlined Li Lecheng, minister of industry and information technology, during a press conference of China's State Council Information Office on Tuesday.

From 2020 to 2024, China's total industrial added value grew from 31.3 trillion yuan (about $4.39 trillion) to 40.5 trillion yuan, said Li, with value-added manufacturing expected to increase by 8 trillion yuan during the 14th Five-Year Plan period, contributing more than 30 percent to the global manufacturing growth.

Green development is continuing to gain momentum. As of 2025, China has 6,430 national-level green factories, and energy consumption per unit of industrial output continues to fall, Li noted.

China has also built the world's largest and most extensive network infrastructure, said Li, with almost 4.6 million 5G base stations built, and 5G applications flourishing in mines, ports and factories.

The minister stressed that artificial intelligence has accelerated the development of thousands of industries, notably the next generation of intelligent terminals and robots, emphasizing humanoid robots' evolution from "moving on the stages" and "running in the fields" to more practical use such as applications at home and in factories.

He added that the resilience of industrial and supply chains continues to strengthen, with China being fully committed to the implementation of high quality development actions in key industrial chains and manufacturing projects.
