An Introduction to Learning Mathematics
The Vancouver Learning Network (VLN) offers a variety of math courses all designed to support students with the different interests, strengths, and future plans. Whether if you are preparing for university, entering a trade, or building strong general math skills, VLN provides a flexible online options that will fit your pathway. Below is an overview of the three main math streams available: General Math, Pre-Calculus, and Workplace Mathematics.

General Mathematics
General Math includes courses such as Foundations of Math and Pre-Calculus 10 and Foundations of Math 11. These courses can help students to build a strong base in algebra, trigonometry, logical thinking, and data analysis. These are designed for students who want solid math skills but are not planning to take calculus in the future.
This pathway is a good choice if:

-
You want a balanced math course

-
You are exploring different post-secondary options

-
Your future program does not require advanced math

Pre-Calculus
The Pre-Calculus pathway includes Pre-Calculus 11 and Pre-Calculus 12. These courses focuses on advanced algebra, functions, trigonometry, and mathematical reasoning. Pre-Calculus is designed for students who plan to take Calculus or enter university programs in science, engineering, technology, business, or health sciences.
This pathway is a good choice if:

-
You are preparing for a university program that requires calculus
-
You enjoy abstract and challenging math
-
You want to develop strong analytical and problem-solving skill

Workplace Mathematics
Workplace Math includes Workplace Math 10 and Workplace Math 11. These courses focus on practical, real-world applications of math, such as measurement, budgeting, proportional reasoning, and interpreting diagrams. They support students who plan to enter trades, apprenticeships, or directly join the workforce after graduation.
This pathway is a good choice if:
-
You prefer hands-on, applied learning
-
You are working toward entrance into a trade or technical program
-
You want math skills used in everyday life and the workplace

Finding the Right Fit
Each math pathway supports a different set of goals. If you are unsure about which course is best for you, you can consider your interests, strengths, and future plans. VLN teachers and counsolers can also help guide you toward the course that matches your educational pathway.
