EN: ENGLISH FIRST PEOPLES 12

Prerequisite: Literary Studies 11 or Incentive Literary Studies 11

English First Peoples 12 builds on what students have learned in earlier English courses. Based on the First Peoples Principles of Learning, this course explores Indigenous oral and written literature in depth. It encourages all students to think critically and creatively while improving and expanding their own writing. In a supportive learning community, students work both independently and together to study literature and create meaningful, purposeful writing. Through authentic Indigenous texts, students will:

• strengthen their ability to communicate in different situations

• deepen their understanding of themselves and learn more about Canada’s past, present, and future in relation to First Peoples

• broaden their sense of what it means to be educated citizens in Canada and the world

This course fulfills the new B.C. graduation requirement for both an Indigenous-focused course and an English Language Arts 12 course for students graduating after September 2023.
